Strength of Mind-- Originally written 2006

The shadow descends,
Furrowing your brow.
The dark thoughts enter,
Hammer at your resistance, your defenses,
Your mental armor, your happiness.
All seems lost: the dark cloud grows,
The menacing beast of despair looms
Closer, larger; bigger, stronger.
It feels too hard; you struggle,
You cry: no one seems to hear you,
No one seems to notice.
The creature almost has you,
Poisonous fangs dripping with despair,
Drawing nearer, closer, sharper.
You run, you flee, yet closer...closer he grows,
Stalking you 'midst the dark corners
Of your tear-stained mind.
Hope is all but gone, time stands still.
Nothing is possible, nothing is clear.
The black cloud descends to enwrap you,
The dark fiend leaps,
Cruel smile of triumph
Adorning his sinister visage.
You cower in fear, pulling away, waiting.
Yet, before the beast arrives,
Before the venomous fangs can strike
A new thought enters your mind.
It starts tiny, a glint of light,
And the best stops , frozen.
The cloud ceases to descend.
The point grows, glowing brighter,
Emitting a dazzling light
Into every corner of your mind, bringing hope.
The black beast shatters with a roar, transfixed.
The cloud dissolves with a clap of thunder, destroyed.
And what was that light,
The hope that saved your soul?
The power rests within, waiting, willing.
What was that  power?
The power is you. Ω
